Summer is almost here. And with it comes a change of rhythm, especially if you have children or are a student or teacher.
So it can be a good period for making changes to your daily life, including your diet, especially if you want to make the most of the time off to enjoy active summer outings, or breaks in which you’re on the go all day.
Obviously, at this time of year you have access to all the lovely seasonal fruit that’s available, from strawberries and raspberries to cherries, plums and gooseberries. And the high water content of these goodies will help keep you hydrated on hot days.
Meanwhile, the best seasonal veg to buy in summer includes courgettes, broad and runner beans, tomatoes and sweetcorn, new potatoes, aubergines and asparagus. So we’re spoilt for choice!
Opt for things which are packed with vitamins, minerals and healthy fats, plus carbs and fibre which release energy slowly.
Here are some healthy favourites to enjoy this summer:
- Apricots
These offer a nice balance of sweetness and acidity and are a useful source of potassium to manage high blood pressure, plus they’re high in fibre, Vitamins A and C, iron and antioxidants. They improve digestion and the immune system, while also supporting eye and heart health. Pack plenty of dried apricots as the ideal snack for days out hiking or on the beach, or to keep you going when travelling. Alternatively, cook them in a tagine or couscous.
- Figs and dates
These work well in a Mediterranean-style salad, or baked into a sponge pudding. Enjoy figs fresh or dried as a healthy, energy-boosting snack. Rich in calcium to support strong bones, they’re also high in fibre. Meanwhile, dates improve digestion, heart health and energy levels and are a source of fibre, antioxidants and minerals.
- Change your breakfast
If your breakfast typically consists of a snatched piece of toast or you regularly cave into your children’s demands for sugar-based cereals, the summer could be a good time to switch to a heathier alternative. Porridge oats are ideal to pack for a self-catering holiday, are crammed with vitamins and minerals and are a natural antioxidant, helping cholesterol and blood sugar levels while releasing energy slowly so you feel fuller for longer.
Try yours with seeds or dried fruit and nuts and complete the taste with organic honey, sugars and sweeteners.
- Refreshing drinks
Obviously, if you’re enjoying active summer days, you’ll need to stay hydrated. One way of making sure you take on enough water is through organic squashes and juices. These are generally healthier than standard products, which tend to be high in sugar. And, of course, it’s much cheaper to take your own drinks on family days out.
And when it comes to tea and coffee or their substitutes, remember to stock up this summer to take with you on holiday. Or why not use the change in season to try a new refreshing brew such as something delightfully herbal? If you really can’t do without your caffeine jolt, organic products are free from synthetic pesticides and fertilisers, while often having a deeper, more complex flavour than non-organic versions.
- Healthy snack swaps
Again, it’s always less expensive to take your own snacks than buy them while you’re out. This summer, consider doing some healthy swaps so that you can enjoy a blast of energy on the move. Hummus chips, for example, feel like a treat and are free from artificial flavours and preservatives and added sugar. So they’re a great alternative to standard chips.
Even chocolate can be made healthier when you seek an energy-boosting cocoa hit from something like Montezuma’s Absolute Black 100% Cocoa – there’s no added sugar, gluten, soya or milk. (What’s more, it tastes amazing.)
